Introduced after World War II as an evolution of the successful IMCO Super, the Triplex lighter represented IMCO's ambition to create the most mechanically sophisticated pocket lighter ever made. Where the Super used a slide-out mechanism, the Triplex engineers devised a three-function action in a single downward press: the lid springs open, the wick assembly rises from the sealed tank, and the flint striker is tensioned simultaneously — hence "Triplex" (three actions, one motion). The pipe-lighting slot is perhaps the most practically clever feature of the Triplex. A small opening in the side of the steel chimney allows the user to insert the mouthpiece of a pipe and direct the flame downward into the bowl without tipping the lighter sideways. This feature made the Triplex a favourite among pipe smokers for decades and remains one of the most thoughtful design details in lighter history. The Triplex was popular with military officers, engineers, and pipe smokers throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Like the Super, it maintained extraordinary mechanical consistency across decades of production. IMCO made very few changes to the Triplex design after its introduction — a sign that the original engineering team got it right the first time. Today the IMCO Triplex is considered a collector's piece as much as a daily lighter.
