Removing rust from vintage lighter inserts

Just bought a beautiful 1960s Zippo but the insert has significant rust on the cam and spring. The case is perfect. What's the safest way to remove rust without damaging the mechanism?

I use Naval Jelly for stubborn rust. Apply, wait 10 mins, scrub with brass brush. Works great on inserts.

After rust removal, apply sewing machine oil to all moving parts. Just a drop on each pivot point.

White vinegar soak for 30 minutes, then gentle scrubbing with a soft brush. Rinse thoroughly and oil immediately.

Consider buying a replacement insert if the rust is severe. Original inserts are available and not too expensive.

Be careful with the flint spring - it's tempered steel and can be damaged by aggressive treatments. Gentle is key.
